Welcome to www.desmond stephenson.com Dedicated to the memory of an Irish artist

“... I was fifteen years old when my uncle Desmond “Des” died in May 1963. I remember well the shock of losing someone so important to me and to our family. I had not been told but my uncle had terminal cancer for almost a year and had died aged forty two in Dublin.
A year before, I had spent some time in his house in Blackrock Co Dublin while my Mother was in a Dublin nursing home for an operation. While I stayed at his home Des painted a brilliant portrait of me in oils and whilst I was sitting for him over a period of some days I saw the man. I saw him concentrate as an artist, his impatience with himself in his drive for perfection, his humour and his total comfort with himself. I saw too his taste for life, particularly for rich food, quality wines and excellent cigars but not least his gentle caring approach to a timid fourteen year old boy.
Almost fifty years later, I still feel proud to have had an accomplished and prominent Irish artist as my uncle. I will strive through this site and in any other ways I can to keep his memory alive for future generations of our growing family. ...”
